Ex-Gulshan thana OC, wife jailed in graft case

Bangladesh desk; Former Gulshan Police Station officer-in-charge Firoz Kabir has been jailed for six years in a corruption case.

The court, at the same time, sentenced Firoz’s wife Sabrina Ahmed to jail for four years in the graft case.

Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-9 Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman pronounced the verdict in presence of the accused couple.

As the couple were out on bail, arrest warrants were issued and they were then sent to prison.

In addition, Firoz was fined Tk 1.74 crore. At the same time, Tk 87,17,194 has been confiscated in favor of the state.

Firoz has been asked to pay the fined money within 60 working days.

From January 1, 2012, to May 31, 2016, Firoz deposited around Tk 309.97 lakh in his current accounts at the Gulshan branches of AB Bank, Dutch Bangla Bank, NRB Commercial Bank, Islami Bank, and BRAC Bank, and in his wife Sabrina Ahmed’s account at Dutch Bangla Bank, according to the case statement.

These deposits exceeded his known sources of income.

Their bank accounts were also involved in a disproportionately large number of transactions. While opening most of these accounts, Firoz cited the source of the funds as his wages, but the type and amount of transactions were not in line with his salary and allowances.

The court ruled against them because they failed to produce a satisfactory explanation or evidence for the source of the money.

ACC assistant director Syed Ataul Kabir filed a case over graft and bribery against the couple on October 3, 2017.

They were indicted in 2019 after police submitted their investigation report.
