Govt nullifies religious link in N’singdi killing, says for family feuds, business enmit

Bangladesh desk: The government on Sunday clarified that Moni Chakraborty, a grocery shop owner in Narsingdi, was killed due to family disputes and previous business enmity, nullifying the religious link with the killing.

Sharing the information at a briefing at Foreign Service Academy on Sunday afternoon, Chief Adviser’s Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahammad said, “It was noted with concern regarding some recent incidents that, due to spreading misinformation, some individuals have attempted or been provoked into actions that could damage communal harmony.”

Referring to the recent incident of Moni Chakraborty killing in Narsingdi, he said according to preliminary assessments by the police and the victim’s family, he was killed due to family disputes and previous business enmity.

As the individual belonged to the Hindu community, false propaganda was spread in various places claiming that he was killed in a communal attack, Foyez added.

It was observed that, based on such misinformation, several distinguished citizens issued statements, he said, noting, many of these individuals had previously conducted neutral investigations in different incidents in Bangladesh and had visited affected areas firsthand.

“We hope, if any incident causes concern, such individuals would verify facts carefully before making statements and, if necessary, visit the location to assess whether there is any communal dimension,” Foyez said.

Otherwise, he said, issuing statements without verifying the facts and spreading false information together can play a significant role in damaging social and communal harmony.

“The government urged everyone to remain cautious and act responsibly in this regard,” Foyez added.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad Majumder were present at the briefing.

Replying to question, Shafiqul Alam said the country’s law and order situation is good now while law enforcement agencies are highly confident over controlling the situation centering the polls.

About Swechhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir killing in the capital, he said three, including the main shooter, have already been arrested while over a dozen of persons were also arrested in connection with brutal murder of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensigh.
