Trump mocks Musk’s new political party, calls him ‘train wreck’
Online desk: US President Donald Trump lashed out at Elon Musk on Sunday after the billionaire entrepreneur announced plans to launch a new political party, calling the move “ridiculous” and describing Musk as a “train wreck” who has gone “off the rails.”
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One at his New Jersey golf club, Trump dismissed Musk’s “America Party” as a disruptive stunt. “We’ve always had a two-party system. Third parties just create confusion. They’ve never worked,” Trump said.
Once a close Trump ally, Musk previously led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) before stepping down in May to return to his business ventures. Their relationship soured over the president’s massive fiscal package, which Musk believes is fiscally irresponsible.
From aboard Air Force One, Trump posted on Truth Social: “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely off the rails. He’s become a TRAIN WRECK. Third parties only create DISRUPTION & CHAOS — and we already have enough of that from the Radical Left Democrats.”
Trump also suggested that Musk’s opposition to the bill was motivated by cuts to electric vehicle subsidies, which impact Tesla. Musk denies this, saying his concerns are purely about debt and wasteful spending.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also weighed in, saying he believes Musk’s companies would prefer him to focus on business, not politics. “He’s brilliant in business. I doubt his boards were happy with this new political plan,” Bessent said in a CNN interview.
Although Musk hasn’t shared many details or registered the party officially, his new effort could complicate Republican prospects in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections — and possibly beyond.
