Court orders public notice for Hasina, 22 others in Purbachal plot cases

Bangladesh desk:  A Dhaka court has ordered public notices to be issued against 23 including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family members and others, directing them to appear in court in connection with corruption cases over the allocation of government plots in Purbachal.

On Tuesday, Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Zakir Hossain Galib instructed that the notices be published through Bangladesh Government Press (BG Press) after reports confirmed the accused are absconding.

The court set July 20 for the next hearing.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam said six cases were filed earlier this year over alleged irregularities in plot allocation by Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK). Arrest warrants have been issued against all accused.

Among those facing public notice are Sheikh Hasina’s son and ICT adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana’s daughter and British MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, Azmira Siddiq Ruponti, along with former and current senior government officials and RAJUK authorities.

ACC filed the cases in January, accusing the defendants of abusing power to secure plots in Purbachal residential project. Charge sheets have been submitted in all six cases.
