Govt issues 11-point directive to curb possible COVID-19 resurgence

Bangladesh desk: Amid growing concerns over a fresh surge in COVID-19 infections globally and the emergence of new sub-variants, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Wednesday issued an 11-point directive to prevent the virus’s spread in Bangladesh.
The move comes as part of heightened precautionary measures, especially concerning international travel and cross-border transmission. Surveillance is being reinforced at all land, sea, and air entry points through International Health Regulations (IHR) desks, according to the DGHS circular.
Public Health Guidelines Issued for General Awareness:
1. Avoid Crowds: Limit presence in congested areas; wear a mask when avoidance is not possible.
2. Wear Masks: Use face masks consistently to guard against respiratory infections.
3. Cough Etiquette: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing.
4. Dispose Tissues Properly: Discard used tissues in a closed bin immediately.
5. Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds.
6. Avoid Face Touching: Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
7. Physical Distance: Maintain at least a three-foot distance from people exhibiting symptoms.
In Case of Symptoms or Suspected Infection:
• If experiencing fever, cough or difficulty breathing, stay home until fully recovered.
• Encourage the patient to wear a mask to cover their mouth and nose.
• Caregivers should also wear masks as a precaution.
• Seek medical help if needed by contacting the nearest hospital or calling IEDCR at 01401-196293 or the health hotline at 16263.
Government Response and Readiness:
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, along with other relevant agencies, has initiated comprehensive preparedness measures, including:
• Availability of COVID-19 testing through RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen methods.
• Continuation of vaccination drives.
• Updated clinical management protocols.
• Adequate supply of critical medications and oxygen.
• Operational readiness of COVID-19 dedicated hospitals equipped with ICU and HDU facilities.
• Availability of ventilators, high-flow nasal cannulas, and other emergency medical equipment.
• Distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as KN95 masks and face shields for healthcare workers.
Health officials urged media outlets to disseminate these guidelines widely to raise awareness and help avert a potential resurgence.
