HC refuses Babul Akhter’s bail in Mitu murder case

Former superintendent of police Babul Akhter and his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu

Bangladesh desk: The High Court on Monday refused to grant bail to former superintendent of police Babul Akhter in the case of killing his Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

The court, however, sought explanation from the government in two weeks why Babul should not be granted bail.

A bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order after hearing Babul’s bail prayer.

Babul has been in jail after Mitu’s father Mosharaf Hossain filed a second murder case with Panchlaish police station in Chattogram on May 12, 2021, accusing Babul and seven others of killing his daughter on June 5, 2016.

He was shown arrested in the second murder case on January 9, 2022, after the Police Bureau of Investigation on January 25, 2022 submitted the final report of the first murder case, which was filed by Babul against unidentified persons, without pressing charges against any accused.

Babul’s lawyer Shishir Manir sought bail for Babul, stating that there was no progress in investigation into the case in six years of the murder.

Unidentified assailants shot at Mitu at the Chattogram city’s GEC intersection in the morning on June 5, 2016, while she was going to drop her son Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus of Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College.
