Rapid Action Battalion claimed to have arrested a serial rapist during a raid in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area this morning.

Bangladesh desk: Arrestee Sagar Mijhi (24) killed a woman in a hotel room at Cox’s Bazar couple of days ago as the victim tried to resist rape, Mahfuzur Rahman, commanding officer of Rab-10, said.

“He is a serial rapist,” he told a press briefing at Rab Media Centre this afternoon.

A team of Rab arrested Sagar around 11:45am today along with a mobile phone and Tk 15,000 in cash, he said.

The Rab official said Sagar rented a room at the Cox’s Bazar hotel on September 18, saying his wife will come soon. Two days later, he took the 26-year-old victim in that room and tried to rape her.

The next morning, police broke open the door and recovered her body as he fled.

The Rab CO said the woman is not his lone victim.

“In primary interrogation, he (Sagar) admitted to raping at least five girls. Two sibling are among the victims,” the Rab CO said.

“Sagar calls himself a graduate, even though he studied up to class four. Using several fake Facebook IDs, he used to develop relationships with girls and women and eventually raped them,” he said, adding if anyone tried to resist, he tortured them.

The Rab official said after analysing his Facebook accounts, they suspect that the number of rape victims could be more than a dozen.

Sagar will be handed over to Cox’s Bazar police in the murder case.
